Martyrs

Martyrs

"Martyrs", oil on canvas board.

Why won't this feeling die? How can one make things bearable? Run, keep running, hoping for it to fade – but will this fire ever be extinguished?

I started this work as a double self-portrait, that I then transformed into the image of the two women. This painting – it's not necessarily a transfiguration, but something different: that bit of me that, seeing the other person, feels that my own self is not enough, that the feeling, the meaning and the Other are filling my soul to a level in which they are spilling from the vase of my body and need the other body to help contain them. And there is that double duality: not only that of the "me" and the "you", but that of the human and the Divine: the one that thinks, holds on and comforts, and the one that succumbs to the irresistible call of the immense, of the vastness of the expression of the overwhelming consciousness. "I cannot understand it, I cannot explain it – but I can be an instrument of it".
